Burnt Island
Burnt Island is based around the songs of Rodge Glass (vocals, acoustic guitar). The band has evolved several times since forming in 2007, with various friends coming and going along the way. The now-stable line-up includes Rodge’s longest serving collaborator, Malcolm Jack (electric guitar, bass, vocals), Rik Evans (viola), Amber Comerford (flute, vocals) and Andrew Campbell (bass, keys, vocals). That is, provided they’re not playing with other bands, studying for Masters degrees, making television programmes in the Hebrides or performing with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on that particular day.
The band have been on Vic Galloway’s ‘Unsigned Heroes’ on his BBC Radio Scotland show, and played at both the Triptych and Connect Festivals, as well as supported the likes of A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Hjaltalin, Sleeping States and The Phenomenal Handclap Band in 2009.
Rodge, also a novelist and biographer, contributed to the Ballads of the Book album. Released in 2007 by Chemikal Underground Records, the album featured collaborations between authors and musicians. Rodge co-wrote and performed the track ‘The Fire’ together with highly influential folk legend Vashti Bunyan.

South Downs
South Downs had been writing and recording for a number of years for fun, before he finally got around to letting others hear what he’d been up to.
Simon Shaw of Lucky Luke was one of those who heard some tracks and he suggested getting together to add some extra instrumentation. The first song to be worked on was ‘Something Inside’ with Simon adding fine melodic bass and fellow Lucky Luke(r) Morag Wilson adding beautiful harmonium throughout.
This debut track is just a brief introduction into South Downs’ world and he promises that there is lots more melodic and melancholic songs to come.
This song clearly shows one of his main influences to be Paul McCartney, but he also spends a great deal of time listening to Bryan Ferry (the name South Downs is taken from a Roxy Music instrumental), Anthony Reynolds, The Kinks and The Lilac Time.
He intends to continue daydreaming, writing and recording and hopefully some material will be available in the near future.
